It is not uncommon these days for hundreds of candidates to apply for one job. Recruiters have to sift through thousands of CVs, while employers are inundated with applications hours after they post a job advert.

There are still plenty of decent jobs out there: but how on earth do you catch the recruiter's eye? How do you stand out from the crowd?

In this video, our careers experts Deborah Warburton, a headhunter at Hedley May, David Leithead, a recruiter at Michael Page, Natalia Martinez-Peraita, an executive coach and Jeremy I'Anson, a careers coach, give us their top tips for how to get a job.

One of the biggest dilemmas is how to present yourself from the beginning. A cover letter is your introduction to a potential new employer and so it is vital that it not only gives the right impression but that it grabs their attention and entices them to read your CV.
