"Missione improbabile", titola l'Independent a proposito della visita di Benedetto XVI a Londra. Secondo il quotidiano è difficile che il papa riesca a convincere i britannici ad abbandonare il materialismo per abbracciare la vita spirituale. Niente di ciò che il pontefice rappresenta solletica l'interesse dell'inglese medio, sottolinea l'opinionista Mary Dejevsky. Anzi, la figura del papa risveglia due tipi di ostilità molto radicati "nella psiche dei britannici: l'anti-papismo protestante e il disprezzo verso tutto ciò che è tedesco, l'idea che ogni cittadino di Germania abbia un Hitler dentro di sè".
