Few & Little - A few & A Little - Confusing English

Few & Little - means that there is not enough of something

Few – is used with plural nouns

• There are few apples. There are not enough apples.
• There are few people at the meeting. There are not enough people to hold a meeting.

Little – is used with uncountable nouns

• I know little English. I don't know enough English to manage.
• I have little sugar. I don't even have enough sugar for my coffee.

A Few/A Little - means that there is enough of something; there is not a lot, but just enough

A Few – is used with plural nouns

• There are a few apples. There are enough apples, but not a lot of apples.
• There are a few people at the meeting. There are enough people to hold a meeting.

A Little – is used with uncountable nouns

• I know a little English. I know enough English to manage.
• I have a little paper. I have enough paper, but I don't have any extra paper.
